St. John's Cathedral (Mosque)

Before the arrival of the Crusaders in 1110, Beirut was already the seat of an Orthodox bishop. After the city's conquest and the appointment of Baldwin of Boulogne as Latin bishop, there were delays in the consecration of a successor, which only took place in 1123. The completion of the cathedral, dedicated to John the Baptist, presumably occurred by 1184. When the Mamluks destroyed Beirut in 1291, large parts of the edifice survived the destruction and were subsequently used as the al-Omari Mosque. It served as the city's main mosque for a long time until the new Mohammed al-Amin Mosque was completed in 2002. The structure was built as a three-aisled basilica with three apses, with the eastern end and the last two bays of the nave dating from the period up to 1147, while the three bays still preserved today were completed by 1175.

The building is located in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, in the district and region of Beirut. It stands at an elevation of approximately 15 meters above sea level.
