St. Johannis Church in Schweinfurt is an Evangelical-Lutheran parish church. As the former main church of the imperial city of Schweinfurt and current seat of the Deanery of Schweinfurt, it is one of the most art-historically valuable Protestant sacred buildings in the Franconian Main region.
History+
The origins of St. Johannis Church date back to the late 12th century, with archaeological findings suggesting an older predecessor building. Originally conceived as a fortified church, it was built to protect the old town established in the 12th century. The north tower was completed by 1237, and the bridal portal on the south side was created around 1240. From 1325, the city council of Schweinfurt assumed responsibility for the construction of the church, which was extensively expanded in the Gothic style in the following centuries.
