St. Lambertus

The origins of St. Lambertus date back a long way, with a Romanesque court chapel as its predecessor. In 1209, this was elevated to a parish church. A crucial development occurred in 1288 during Düsseldorf's elevation to city status, when a collegiate foundation was established and the church was granted the title of the Assumption of Mary. Construction of the current three-aisled hall church in the Lower Rhenish brick Gothic style began around 1370. The solemn consecration took place on July 12, 1394. From the late 16th century, St. Lambertus served as the ducal burial site for members of the House of Berg. After a fire in 1815, the spire was renewed, with the wood used warping and giving the tower its characteristic twist. Following the destruction of World War II, the spire was deliberately reconstructed in its twisted form.

St. Lambertus Cathedral is centrally located in the city of Düsseldorf, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, St. Lambertus is a Roman Catholic parish church and is protected as a historical monument. The twisted spire is a prominent feature of the building.
