St. Mariä Empfängnis (Kleve)

The Minorite monastery in Kleve was founded in 1285 by Count Dietrich, who provided the friars with land, a dwelling, and an existing church. The monastery's existence is documented since 1300. Between 1425 and 1445, the entire monastery complex, including the current simple Gothic monastery church, was rebuilt. The church formed the southern flank of the rectangular monastic complex, which included convent buildings and a cloister. The choir stalls were carved by Arnt von Kalkar in 1474. The monastery survived the Reformation period in the Duchy of Kleve. In 1698, the church received a Baroque pulpit by Nikolaus Albers. Under French administration, the monastery was dissolved in 1802, and the buildings were sold into private hands. After secular use during the Napoleonic era, the church was later reinstated for worship as the parish church of the lower town. During World War II, the Lower Town Church, along with large parts of Kleve, was almost completely destroyed by bombing, but it was rebuilt in its original form in the post-war years. Since 1992, the church's new altar has housed a relic of Saint Adalbert of Prague.

Today, the church functions as a filial church of the Catholic parish and provostry of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt. It is an architectural monument and contains significant furnishings such as the choir stalls by Arnt von Kalkar from 1474 and a Baroque pulpit from 1698. The organ was built in 1961 by the Klais organ workshop.
