Domkirche St. Marien

Cathedral Church

In the heart of Hamburg stands St. Marien Cathedral, an impressive church that has served as the episcopal seat of the Archdiocese of Hamburg since 1995. The Neo-Romanesque edifice, completed in 1893, is a significant cultural monument of the city and is dedicated to the Mother of God, Mary.

History+

The current cathedral is the successor to a medieval Hamburg Cathedral, which existed in the Old Town until 1807 and was once the co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Bremen-Hamburg. After the Reformation, this cathedral formed an enclave under various external ecclesiastical authorities until it was finally demolished in the early 19th century. The present St. Marien Cathedral was constructed from 1889 to 1893 as a Roman Catholic parish church. It was the first new Catholic church built in Hamburg since the Reformation. Its consecration took place on June 28, 1893. During World War II, the building suffered damage, particularly to its windows and parts of the roof. After the war, a vibrant community life developed, leading to St. Marien Church functioning as an episcopal church from 1957. With the re-establishment of the Archdiocese of Hamburg in 1995, it officially became the cathedral church. Between 2007 and 2008, extensive renovation and modernization took place, redesigning the altar area and adding a cathedral sacristy to meet the requirements of a cathedral.
