St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's Church was first documented in 1298. After the church tower collapsed in 1382, destroying the choir and parts of the nave, reconstruction began. In 1416, the foundation stone for the western structure was laid. The tower was built between 1475 and 1478 and covered with copper in 1485. A very tall Gothic spire, which collapsed in a storm in 1495 and was rebuilt, reputedly gave the church a height of 151 meters. This would have made it the tallest building in the world from 1549 until its destruction by lightning in 1647. The current Baroque dome was completed in 1708. During the Reformation and a city fire in 1647, much of the original interior was destroyed.
