St. Martin

The church originated from a private chapel of a Carolingian royal court, which served as the venue for several synods under the Carolingians and Ottonians. Furthermore, it played an important role in the missionary work among the Main Slavs. In 976, the church came into the possession of the Diocese of Würzburg through a donation from Otto I, and in 1017, it was transferred to the Diocese of Bamberg through an exchange. Around 1200, the old royal church was replaced by a late Romanesque church with a cruciform ground plan; parts of the transept and the crypt beneath it are preserved from this period. In 1354, Bishop Leopold von Bebenburg of Bamberg converted the church into a collegiate foundation. In the 14th century, it was expanded into a High Gothic basilica, whose clerestory has been hidden beneath a gable roof since 1540. The main nave of the longhouse features a plastered flat beamed ceiling, while other areas of the church interior are vaulted. The tower, first mentioned in 1406, acquired its current form in 1670. Through the Imperial Deputation Act of 1803, the Forchheim collegiate foundation was assigned to the Electorate of Bavaria, which had already militarily occupied it the previous year. With the secularization in the same year, the church became a parish church.
