St.-Nikolai-Church

The church can be visited

St. Nicholas' Church in Stralsund is a significant sacred building and the oldest of the three large parish churches in the Hanseatic city. It was first documented in 1276 and is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of seafarers. Its imposing architecture and rich history make it an outstanding testament to medieval architecture in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

History+

The first documented mention of St. Nicholas' Church dates back to 1276. Throughout its history, the church underwent numerous changes and preservations. A profound event was the Stralsund Church Break on April 10, 1525, during which many artworks and altars were destroyed. Although some goods were later recovered, the city council, under Mayor Franz Wessel, ordered their burial to prevent further "misuse." Later, Gothic elements were replaced by Baroque ones, and the colorful design gave way to a simple white by 1702. Between 1891 and 1909, a comprehensive restoration of the original color schemes took place.

Location+

St. Nicholas' Church is located in Stralsund, in the Vorpommern-Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 17 meters above sea level.
