Münster Cathedral
St. Paul's Cathedral in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a significant sacred building and the cathedral of the Diocese of Münster. It is considered one of the city's landmarks and combines Romanesque and Gothic stylistic elements in its architecture, making it an outstanding example of medieval building art.
History+
Today's St. Paul's Cathedral is the third church building on this site. Its first predecessor, the so-called Ludgerus Cathedral, was built in 805 and existed until 1377. A second cathedral followed in the 10th or 11th century. As early as 1192, a Romanesque westwork with two towers was added to this second building. Between 1225 and 1264, the current Gothic cathedral was built, incorporating the older westwork. In 1377, the first cathedral was demolished, and a replacement building, the so-called Old Cathedral, was erected to its north. In the late 14th century, the cloister and several chapels were added.
