St. Peter

Construction of St. Peter's Church began in 1916 in Alstaden, a locality that for a long time lacked its own church due to not belonging to the surrounding monasteries. After the Reformation in 1591, Alstaden was predominantly Protestant. It was not until 1763 that the village was part of the St. Marien Mülheim parish, with the Catholic population initially small but significantly increasing by 1864. As a result of reorganization and population growth, Alstaden was partially assigned to the municipality of Oberhausen in 1862. This led to the establishment of temporary churches and later larger new buildings, intended to shorten distances for the faithful. The Herz Jesu Oberhausen parish, to which St. Peter later belonged, was founded in 1892. The St. Petri Church Building Association in the so-called Heidebezirk initiated the construction of the church, which was consecrated in 1918 as St. Petri Heide. Due to the strong increase in the Catholic population, the St. Petri Heide rectory was elevated to an independent parish, St. Peter Alstaden, in 1920. In 2007, St. Peter became part of the larger Herz Jesu Oberhausen parish, before being decommissioned and deconsecrated on October 24, 2021.

The former St. Peter's Church is located in the northern part of Oberhausen's Alstaden district, directly on Peterplatz. It is surrounded by green spaces and integrated into the ensemble of other community buildings.

The former St. Peter's Church has been decommissioned and deconsecrated since October 2021. The well-known gospel choir S(w)ing and Praise St. Peter Alstaden, which was based here, moved to the main church of St. Antonius in 2021.
