Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, Dillingen

The church's origins date back to the 13th and 15th centuries, on whose foundations the current building was erected. In 1498, a collegiate church was established at a predecessor building by Bishop Friedrich II von Zollern. The current three-nave Baroque structure was built from 1619 to 1628 under the direction of court architect Hans Alberthal. After damage during the Thirty Years' War, a renovation took place in 1643. The originally Gothic tower of the predecessor church was raised to 49 meters in 1669 by David Mozart, an ancestor of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In 1733, the Erasmus Chapel was added, and the stucco work and frescoes in their current form were completed in 1733 and 1734. The collegiate church was dissolved in 1803 during secularization, and the church reverted to its function as a city parish church. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1979. A comprehensive structural repair with exterior and interior restoration occurred from August 2015 to April 2019.

The Basilica is an active Catholic parish church and an important listed building in Bavaria. The monastery church of the Dillingen Franciscans adjoins its southeast corner, while a Lourdes Grotto is located at the southwest corner. Inside, the church houses an organ by Hubert Sandtner from 1978, which was expanded in 2006, as well as a historic set of three bells from 1724, supplemented by two modern bells from 1981.
