Sankt-Sebastian-Kirche

The foundation stone for the collegiate church of St. Sebastian was laid around 1015 by Archbishop Gero, who was buried there after his death in 1022. Originally dedicated to Saint Sebastian, John the Evangelist, and Fabian, the focus shifted after the acquisition of a head relic of Saint Sebastian. The Romanesque building suffered fire damage in 1188 and 1207. In the 14th century, the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style, with the old choir replaced by a larger one. In the early 15th century, the nave was redesigned to become a late Gothic hall church, while retaining the Romanesque floor plan. Archbishop Ernst rededicated the church in 1489. During the siege of Magdeburg in 1550, cannons were placed on the church towers for defense. In the course of the Reformation, St. Sebastian became Protestant in 1558 and was converted into a Protestant collegiate church in 1573. The Thirty Years' War brought the destruction of the church by fire in 1631. The choir was rebuilt only in 1663, and the first service was held in 1692. From 1756, the church served as a magazine, and the collegiate church was dissolved by Jérôme Bonaparte in 1810. The building was used militarily and later acquired by the city of Magdeburg as a wool warehouse. Between 1845 and 1854, German Catholics used the choir. In 1865, the Liebfrauenstift bought the church and, following a settlement in 1873, transferred ownership to the Catholic Mariengemeinde. After renovations, the first Catholic mass since the Reformation was celebrated in 1878, and the provostry was transferred. Further renovations followed in 1928.

Today, the Cathedral of St. Sebastian is the Roman Catholic cathedral church of the Diocese of Magdeburg and functions as a parish church. It is a protected cultural monument and part of the Romanesque Road.
