St. Ulrich's and St. Afra's Abbey

The history of the site dates back to the 8th century, when earlier church buildings stood there, dedicated to the veneration of Saint Afra. These early places of worship were destroyed by wars and fires. In the 11th century, a Benedictine monastery took over the guardianship of the sacred site, which also housed the tombs of Bishops Simpert and Ulrich. The current construction began in 1467, after the dilapidated predecessor church had been demolished. Valentin Kindlin started the late Gothic new building, which, however, was partially destroyed by a storm in 1474. Burkhart Engelberg completed the construction around 1500, with King Maximilian I laying the foundation stone for the choir. Construction work stagnated and came to a complete halt in 1537. After the Reformation, work resumed and the interior was renewed. The final consecration took place in 1607. In the 17th century, the proclamations of Roman-German kings took place twice in the sacristy. During the secularization in 1802, the monastery was dissolved, and the church was rededicated as a city parish church.
