St. Ursula Chapel

The St. Ursula Chapel Alsleben is a chapel dedicated to Saint Ursula. It is located 1.5 km southeast of Alsleben near Bad Königshofen in Lower Franconia, in a wooded area in the immediate vicinity of the Bavarian-Thuringian state border.

Previously, a church dedicated to Saint Ursula already stood on the hill. This was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525 but was soon replaced by a new small chapel. In 1704, the widow of the Sternberg castle builder Wolff Dietrich Truchseß von Wetzhausen (Baroness Eva Rosina) donated the relics. This quickly made the chapel a popular pilgrimage destination. Up to 10,000 pilgrims came each year. In 1750, construction of a new, larger church began, which was consecrated in 1754. In 1803, St. Ursula was closed, but after protests, it was reopened in 1811.

On July 5, 1875, a lightning strike set the church on fire, turning the building into a ruin. A year later, it was rebuilt by the citizens and solemnly consecrated in 1882, followed by the sacristy extension in 1888. In 1982, two new bells were consecrated, donated by the "Soldatenkameradschaft Alsleben" (Alsleben Soldiers' Association) and private donors. The bells are tuned to "d-f-g".
