St. Viktor

The first written mention of a parish church in Breisig dates back to 1041. The patronage rights originally belonged to St. Florin's Collegiate Church in Koblenz. In the 13th century, the church was assigned to the Argau deanery in the Cologne Liber valoris. A 1311 contract regulated the joint exercise of patronage rights by the Koblenz Florinsstift and the Essen Collegiate Church. A 1668 description mentioned three altars in the church. The current three-aisled pillar basilica was built in the mid-13th century, possibly incorporating remnants of a previous building in the substructure of the west tower. Between 1557 and 1587, the original wall paintings were whitewashed over, but rediscovered in 1849 and uncovered between 1909 and 1914. Another restoration took place in 1990.
