The Town Fortification can be visited

The Ahrweiler-Ahrtor town fortification is located in Ahrweiler, a district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It forms part of the almost completely preserved town wall that encloses the old town. The Ahrtor itself is a five-story gate tower that once served as the town's armory.

History+

The existence of the Ahrweiler town fortification is documented since the mid-13th century, with first mentions of the moat dating back to 1261, the town gates to 1297, and the wall to 1298. The 1800-meter-long town wall, built on arches and pillars to better absorb shocks, encloses an area of approximately 18 hectares. The town moat was divided into four sections, each with its own water level due to topographical conditions and different elevations, separated by barrier walls.
