Augsburg Town Fortification

Already in Roman times, Augsburg possessed a stone fortification with moats and gates. In the early Middle Ages, wooden palisades protected the bishop's city. Around 955, during the wars against the Hungarians, earthworks and low walls, known as the bishop's walls, were constructed. In the early 14th century, the city wall was extended to the north and south, and in the mid-14th century, the Jakobervorstadt was enclosed. Augsburg was then considered difficult to capture, also thanks to advanced weapon technology. In the 16th century, the facilities were reinforced and armament improved. Between 1605 and 1626, Elias Holl modernized the city gates, with the focus on aesthetic embellishments.
