The city fortifications of Avignon, one of the best-preserved of their kind in Europe, encircle the historic old town of the French metropolis. This structure once protected the popes and residents of the city.

History+

The origins of the city fortifications date back to the 12th century, when Avignon was an independent city-republic and a first ring of walls was built. However, this was destroyed in 1226 during the siege by Louis VIII. Faced with repeated attacks by mercenary troops, Pope Clement VI decided in 1348 to erect a new, more robust city wall on the remains of the old structure. This was intended to provide protection not only from military threats but also from the floods of the Rhône. Its completion took place in 1376.
