In the province of Padua, Veneto, Italy, the city walls of Cittadella represent a well-preserved example of medieval military architecture. This almost entirely intact city wall encloses the historic core of Cittadella.

History+

The origins of settlement in the Cittadella region date back to the Bronze Age, and in Roman times, the land was parcelled out. The city of Cittadella itself was founded in 1220 by order of Padua as a fortified outpost to protect its territory during conflicts between city-states. It quickly developed into a stronghold against the rural nobility. Control of Cittadella changed hands multiple times, including to Ezzelino da Romano, Cangrande I della Scala of Verona, and the Carrara family of Padua. In 1405, Cittadella voluntarily joined the Republic of Venice but retained its own statutes.
