City Wall Coesfeld

The Walkenbrückentor is the last remaining of formerly six city gates of the former Coesfeld city wall.

The gate was severely damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt according to its external appearance. The tower building currently houses the City Museum and the Municipal Tower Gallery. The museum, named "Das Tor" (The Gate), was thoroughly renovated and redesigned before its reopening on January 29, 2012. The completed first section covers the topics "Jewish Life" and "National Socialism in Coesfeld" in two rooms. In addition, there is a "Researcher's Lab" for city history. Interactive applications are intended to particularly appeal to young museum visitors. The concept was developed by a project group led by Georg Veit. The museum is to be expanded step by step in the coming years.

Besides the Walkenbrückentor, only the Pulverturm (Powder Tower) still exists in Coesfeld as a contemporary witness. This is a three-story building that is now used by the local heritage association.
