City Wall Dubrovnik

Construction of the fortifications began as early as the late 8th century and proved its worth for the first time during a fifteen-month siege by the Saracens in 866–867. The current form of the walls, which survived the devastating earthquake of 1667, was built from the 12th century onwards and continuously expanded until the end of the 17th century. Numerous master builders from Dalmatia and Italy contributed to their design over the centuries, including Nićifor Ranjina, Michelozzo di Bartolommeo, and Paskoje Miličević. The strategic importance of the fortifications is underscored by the multitude of sieges the city experienced throughout its history, including attacks by Venice, Serbian and Bosnian rulers, as well as in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Dubrovnik City Walls are located in the city of Dubrovnik, in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, in the Jadranska Hrvatska (Adriatic Croatia) region, Croatia, at an elevation of approximately 33 m above sea level.

Today, the historic city walls are accessible to visitors and can be explored, offering insight into the impressive defensive architecture of bygone eras.
