The Freistadt city fortifications in Upper Austria are among the best-preserved medieval defensive structures in Austria. They encircle the historic old town of Freistadt and offer a comprehensive insight into the military architecture of past centuries.
History+
The origins of the city fortifications date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. They comprise a system of inner and outer city walls, a zwinger, and a deep moat. In the Middle Ages, two gate towers, the Linzertor in the south and the Böhmertor in the north, secured access to the city, supplemented by the Posttürl as a back entrance. Eight defensive towers reinforced the walls, six of which are still preserved today. The Pulverturm, built in 1522, served for storing gunpowder and had no direct defensive function.
