Town Fortification Fürstenwerder-Woldegker Gate

The historic building, known as "Altes Rathaus" (Old Town Hall), dates back to the the 14th century. It was originally constructed as a merchant's house and later served as the seat of the city council for several centuries. The building showcases a blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles, reflecting the different periods of its expansion and renovation.

Construction Phases

• 14th Century: Original construction as a two-story merchant's house with a distinctive stepped gable.
• 16th Century: Extensive renovation and expansion, adding the Renaissance-style facade elements and a third floor.
• 18th Century: Minor alterations, including the addition of baroque window frames.
• 19th Century: Restoration work to preserve the historical features, removing some later additions.

Today, the Altes Rathaus no longer serves as the town hall but is a prominent cultural center and a popular tourist attraction. It houses a museum on the ground floor, showcasing the city's history and various artifacts. The upper floors are used for art exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events. The building is a testament to the rich history and architectural heritage of the city.

The city wall was built in the Middle Ages from fieldstones and is approx. 1,200 meters long. It was restored from 1996 to 1999. Of the originally three city gates, the Woldegk Gate and the Berlin Gate have been preserved. The Prenzlau Gate was demolished in 1878.
