Town Fortification Hartberg
The Hartberg town fortification encloses the town of Hartberg in Styria, Austria. Its preserved sections and towers give insight into the defense strategies of earlier centuries.
History+
The origins of Hartberg's town wall date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. A feature is the Reckturm, constructed in the second half of the 13th century. The steep slope below the parish church and charnel house formed a part of the church's fortress and was included in the original wall circuit. In the 19th century, two of the former town gates were removed.
On site+
Visitors can explore the remnants of the town fortification. It extends from the Reckturm, across the terraced town park, to Hartberg Castle in the north, and continues along the ring eastward to Franz-Schmidt-Gasse. In the east, the Schölbingerturm is also preserved, from which a short section of the wall extends.
