The Tatarenturm in Magdeburg is a relic of the medieval city fortifications.

History+

The construction of the Tatarenturm is dated to the years 1239 or 1241. Archbishop Wilbrand von Käfernburg commissioned its construction as part of comprehensive fortification measures to protect the city from potential Tatar attacks. Originally, the tower stood at the southern end of a retaining wall that separated the higher cathedral area from the Elbe foreland. In 1536, the lower part of the tower was covered by an embankment during the construction of the Rondell Cleve, located slightly to the south.
