City Wall Monteriggioni

Between 1213 and 1219, the Republic of Siena had this fortification built. Its primary purpose was to monitor the border with the Republic of Florence, particularly the Elsa Valley and the fortress of Staggia Senese. In contrast to previous practices of expanding existing fortresses, the construction of such a new complex was a novelty for Siena. The name Monteriggioni likely derives from “Montis Regis” (King's Mountain) or “Mons Regionis” (highest mountain in the region). As early as 1232, Florence demanded the abandonment of the fortification. This led to armed conflicts in 1244 and 1254. After a Sienese victory in the Battle of Montaperti in 1261, there was a brief interruption of the conflicts. Eight years later, in the Battle of Colle, Sienese troops found refuge in the fortress and were able to withstand a siege by Florence. In the 15th century, the walls were reinforced to resist the emerging artillery. Another siege by Florence in 1526 was repelled. However, in 1554, Monteriggioni fell into the hands of Gian Giacomo Medici's troops through betrayal, when Capitano Bernardino Zeti allowed a city gate to be opened. The fortress then passed into the possession of the Medici and changed ownership several times in the following centuries.
