City Wall Murten

The ring wall of Murten is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Switzerland. It was built in 1238 and later expanded, heightened, and reinforced in several stages. In the 20th century, a comprehensive restoration was carried out. The formerly existing moats were filled in during the 16th century. The almost completely preserved ring wall, with an average height of 8.5 m, features a battlement from the 15th century, which is accessible for long stretches in the southern section, as well as twelve towers of various shapes and sizes. The city had two main entrances, of which the Berne Gate (received its current form in 1778) in the northeast is preserved.
