City Wall Murten

The origins of the fortifications date back to 1238, when the first ring wall was constructed. The complex underwent several expansions, heightenings, and reinforcements. The moats that once existed were filled in during the 16th century. A comprehensive restoration was carried out in the 20th century. Of the original two main entrances, the Berne Gate in the northeast remains, having received its current form in 1778.
