The Berger Gate in Nördlingen is a component of the medieval city fortifications that completely enclose the old town. It is part of Germany's only city wall that features a continuously accessible and covered battlement.

History+

Construction of the Nördlingen city wall, to which the Berger Gate belongs, began in 1327 under the direction of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor. It replaced an older defensive structure. Between 1536 and 1613, alterations were made, including the erection of bulwarks and bastions. The Berger Gate itself was built from 1435 to 1436 under the supervision of master builder Hans Rews. It acquired its current form between 1574 and 1575 through the master builders Wolfgang and Kaspar Wallberger, who expanded the upper tower floors.
