Town Fortification Nürnberg-Laufer Tor

The Gate can be visited

In the northeast of Nuremberg's old town, the Laufer Tor is a part of the city fortifications. It is one of the four round towers of the city wall, formerly known as “Schwarz M.”

History+

The Laufer Tor was first documented in 1377 as an element of Nuremberg's last city wall. It took over the function of the older Laufer Schlagturm and served as a traffic artery for travelers on the Golden Road from Sulzbach and Prague, as well as the northern route to Bayreuth. During the Second Margrave War in 1552, the gate tower suffered damage.
