Ochsenfurt Town Fortification

The Ochsenfurt town fortification encloses the historic old town in a regular rectangle and is one of Bavaria's best-preserved medieval defensive structures.

The town fortification in Ochsenfurt already existed in the first half of the 14th century. Its basic form, largely preserved today, with a curtain wall, zwinger, and moat, was established in the last third of the 14th century. Originally, the complex had four gates. Of these, the Upper Gate in the east, the Lower Gate in the northwest, and the Klingentor in the west have been preserved to this day. The Maintor, which led to the Old Main Bridge, was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. Between the gates, rectangular and round towers protected the wall. The gates and towers were expanded in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, with further repairs taking place in the 18th century.
