Town Fortification Seßlach

The "Altes Rathaus" in Seßlach is a two-story plastered building with a high hipped roof, a roof rider, and a striking half-timbered gable. It was built in 1750/51 by the master builder Johann Michael Schmidt from Ebern. The building served as the town hall until 1972. Today, it houses the tourist information office and a small museum.

The current building is not the first town hall in Seßlach. Its predecessor, a half-timbered building, stood on the same site and was demolished due to dilapidation. The new building was constructed in the Baroque style, which was typical for the time. The costs for the construction were borne by the city of Seßlach and the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg.

The "Altes Rathaus" is characterized by its symmetrical facade and the regular arrangement of its windows. The ground floor is plastered, while the upper floor features exposed half-timbering, which is typical for the region. The hipped roof is adorned with a roof rider, which once housed a bell. The gable on the north side is particularly striking, with its decorative half-timbering.

Today, the "Altes Rathaus" is an important cultural and tourist center in Seßlach. The tourist information office provides visitors with information about the city and its surroundings. The museum on the upper floor showcases the history of Seßlach and its inhabitants. Various events and exhibitions are also held in the building.

The old town of Seßlach is still almost completely surrounded by its late medieval wall. Unusual are the loose cobblestones on the top of the wall instead of a battlement. The three gate towers have also been preserved. The fortifications of the Würzburg administrative town were built in the 14th/15th century and expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries. In front of the Rothenberger Tor, a baroque arched bridge complements the historical ensemble.
