Town Fortification Winterhausen

The Winterhausen town fortification dates back to the 15th century, when it was erected as a market town defense. Significant parts of the complex have been preserved to this day. Particularly striking are the seven shell towers that once reinforced the defensive line. The fortification also encompassed the churchyard, indicating an integrated defense strategy. Along the Dözel and Kirchberg, upright wall sections with towers can still be seen today. A special feature is the flood embankment, which is situated in front of the town wall to the south (Alte Brückenstraße) and east (Fährweg) and had a lockable access to Maingasse. The former moat area between the flood embankment and the remains of the town wall is now occupied by gardens.
