Origins and Early Development
The former market fortification from the 15th century is still partially preserved, including the churchyard, with seven surviving shell towers. Its overall layout, however, is still clearly recognizable. Upstanding sections with shell towers still exist along the Dözel and the Kirchberg. To the south (Alte Brückenstraße) and east (Fährweg), a flood embankment is situated in front of the town wall, with a lockable access to the Maingasse. Between the flood embankment and the remains of the town wall, the former moat area of the town fortification is occupied by gardens.
