In the 12th century, Bavarian settlers, led by the Kuenringer, advanced deep into the Waldviertel. They built a castle on a hill above the confluence of the Kamp and Zwettl rivers. At its foot, the settlement of Zwettl emerged, first mentioned in a document in 1139.
