Stafford Castle is a historic castle complex in the county of Staffordshire, England. Originally built as a wooden castle, it evolved into a significant stone structure.

History+

The origins of Stafford Castle date back to the 1070s, when the Norman Robert de Tosny had a wooden castle built here to secure control over the Anglo-Saxon population. This complex was designed in the motte-and-bailey style. In 1347, Ralph de Stafford commissioned a stonemason to build a stone castle on the castle mound. Three years later, Ralph was appointed the first Earl of Stafford. Under Humphrey Stafford, who was elevated to Duke of Buckingham in 1444, the castle experienced its heyday. After a history of ownership and the execution of Edward Stafford in 1521, the castle fell to the Crown.
