Steinsches Castle

The Stein'sche Schloss is a town castle in the center of Nassau in Rhineland-Palatinate. It served as the seat of the Imperial Knight family vom Stein. Among others, the Prussian reform minister Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein grew up there.

The predecessor building of the castle was a tithe court, which the vom Stein family already owned in the 14th century. At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, the family, which had become wealthy and influential, moved its seat from the Stein'sche Burg outside Nassau to this complex. In the following centuries, the former court was converted and expanded into a castle.

In 1621, the main building in the Late Renaissance style was completed. In 1755, two Baroque wings were added. Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein commissioned the master builder Johann Claudius von Lassaulx with an extension in commemoration of the Wars of Liberation. Thereupon, an octagonal, Neo-Gothic tower was added in 1815/16. One source states for the 19th century that (historically valuable) stained glass windows from the church of St. Kastor (Dausenau) were "carried off" into the tower construction.

Today, the castle is owned by Stein's descendants in the female line, the Counts of Kanitz.
