The Fort can be visited

The Amsterdam-Fort bezuiden Spaarndam position is a historic fortress in the Netherlands, which served as part of the defensive ring around the capital city of Amsterdam. This structure, distinguished by its strategic location and its role in the former defense system, now offers insights into late 19th-century military architecture.

History+

Fort bezuiden Spaarndam was constructed between 1882 and 1903 as part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a defensive ring approximately 135 kilometers long. This ring, intended to protect the Dutch capital, was based on the principle of inundation, meaning the controlled flooding of land areas. The fort itself was designed to defend the Slaperdijk and Westlaan and worked closely with Fort benoorden Spaarndam. A defensive work had already stood at this location in the early 19th century. In 1901, the construction of the bomb-proof concrete building was completed. The entire Stelling van Amsterdam, whose structures were built until 1920, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.

Location+

The Amsterdam-Fort bezuiden Spaarndam position is located in Spaarndam, in the province of Noord-Holland, in the West-Nederland region of the Netherlands. The fortress is situated at an elevation of approximately 11 meters above sea level.

Today, the fort is accessible to visitors. It houses, among other things, a café/restaurant, a small museum dedicated to the Amsterdam fortress system, and rooms for exhibitions and theater performances. Events such as concerts and children's activities are regularly held here. The fort can also be rented for private parties. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the surroundings with a rented boat or participate in organized boat tours that also pass other forts. Particularly noteworthy are the restored painted panoramic sketch and the setting tables in the left gorge casemate. From the dome buildings, there is a view of the former firing range and the inundation area.
