Defence Line of Amsterdam-Fort Diemerdam

The Amsterdam-Fort Diemerdam position is a historic fortress that was once part of the extensive defensive ring around the Dutch capital. Located in Diemen, North Holland, it offered strategic protection against maritime threats and today stands as an accessible testament to military architecture.
History+
The origins of the defensive installation near Diemerdam date back to 1787, when a battery was built here to protect Amsterdam from a potential Prussian attack. The current fortress, as part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, was constructed between 1880 and 1920. Its primary task was to protect the capital from attacks from the then Zuiderzee (now IJmeer), to repel enemy landings, and to secure the Diemerdammersluis. The entire Stelling van Amsterdam, a defensive ring approximately 135 km long, was based on the principle of inundation and was never put into use. In 1996, the preserved structures of the Amsterdam position were included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
