Defence Line of Amsterdam-Fort IJmuiden

The Fort can be visited

Fort IJmuiden, an impressive structure of the former Defense Line of Amsterdam, is strategically located at the mouth of the North Sea Canal. This historic fortress, once part of an extensive defensive ring, is distinguished by its unique island location and robust construction, designed to protect access to the Dutch capital.

History+

The construction of Fort IJmuiden took place between 1880 and 1887 as an integral part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, a defensive ring approximately 135 kilometers long. Originally situated on the northern bank of the North Sea Canal, it became an island due to the canal's widening in the 1920s. In 1910, the IJmuiden position was further strengthened with four additional batteries. The Defense Line of Amsterdam, completed by 1920 and based on the principle of inundation, was never used in combat. During the German occupation, the fort island served as the core stronghold of Fortress IJmuiden, with the original armored dome and cannons removed and melted down, though the armored gallery remained. The preserved structures of the Defense Line of Amsterdam have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.

Location+

The fortress is located in IJmuiden, in the province of Noord-Holland, within the West-Nederland region of the Netherlands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 6 meters above sea level.
