St. Stephan Church

The earliest traces of St. Stephen's Church can be traced back to the late Roman period. Even at the time of the founding of the Diocese of Konstanz at the end of the 6th century, a house of worship existed at this location. The first documentary mention dates back to 680. Around 900, a community of clerics was established there. After being damaged during the Hungarian invasion in 926, the church was rebuilt. In the 11th century, the settlement around St. Stephen grew significantly and was integrated into the city. Around 1130, it was converted into a Romanesque basilica. From the 13th century onwards, St. Stephen developed into a civic and market church. During the Council of Konstanz (1414–1418), the Roman Rota convened here.
