In Meeder, a district of Coburg, stands Sternberg Castle, a historic building that was once part of a moated castle complex. It evolved from a medieval knight's seat into a Renaissance castle and still shapes the townscape today.

The origins of Sternberg Castle date back to the 11th century, when a moated castle complex was built on this site. It developed into a knight's estate. A transformation took place in 1624, when the property was converted into a Renaissance-style castle. Until 1588, the estate was owned by the Lords of Sternberg, who also resided at Callenberg Castle. After the death of the last vassal, it passed to Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg. In 1592, he transferred the property to Cantor Max Amling, who initiated the conversion to the present castle.
