Baumgartenberg Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1141 and existed until its dissolution in 1784. It was endowed by Otto von Machland and his wife Jeuta von Peilstein. Initially settled by monks from Morimond, it was later subordinated to Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The late Romanesque abbey church was consecrated in 1243. In the 15th century, the complex suffered arson during Hussite incursions, leading to its reconstruction in the Late Gothic style. In the 17th century, the monastery underwent Baroque renovation under Abbot Bernhard Breil, a development continued by his successor Candidus Pfiffer, but which ended around 1700 due to financial difficulties.
