The Abbey can be visited

Dürnstein Abbey, a former monastery, is situated in the Wachau region of Lower Austria. Its blue and white church tower is visible from afar and is considered one of the landmarks of the region.

History+

The origins of the abbey date back to 1372, when a chapel was built on this site. In 1400, this was expanded to include the construction of a crypt. The official founding of Dürnstein Abbey took place in 1410. A turning point was the dissolution of the monastery under Emperor Joseph II in 1788. As a result, the buildings and land holdings were transferred to the Augustinian Canons Regular of Herzogenburg Abbey, which remains responsible for the parish of Dürnstein to this day.
