Eberndorf Abbey

Around 1100, Count Chazilo and his wife endowed a small Marian church and properties for a planned monastery in Eberndorf. In 1106, Patriarch Ulrich I of Aquileia had the count's remains transferred to Eberndorf and a larger church built, which Bishop Riwin of Concordia consecrated. In the mid-12th century, under Patriarch Pilgrim I, the church was expanded into an Augustinian canons' monastery. Between 1446 and 1476, under Provost Lorenz, defensive fortifications were added. Nevertheless, the abbey suffered severe damage from Turkish incursions, Hungarians, and a fire in 1483, but was rebuilt under Provost Leonhard von Keutschach. In the early 16th century, there was another construction phase under Provost Valentin Fabri.
