Abbey
Herzogenburg Monastery

Herzogenburg Abbey, an Augustinian canons' monastery in Lower Austria, remains a monastic community, playing a cultural and religious role in the region.
History+
The monastery's origins trace back to 1112 when it was founded by Ulrich I of Passau in St. Georgen an der Traisen. Due to frequent flooding, the abbey was relocated approximately 10 kilometers upstream to Herzogenburg in 1244. This move led to the development of the "Upper Market," which was under the manorial lordship of the canons' monastery. From 1714 onwards, the abbey underwent Baroque renovation, involving architects such as Jakob Prandtauer, Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, and Joseph Munggenast. Despite the Josephine suppressions of monasteries in the late 18th century, Herzogenburg Abbey managed to survive and was strengthened by incorporating parishes from dissolved monasteries.
