The Klein-Mariazell Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, is located in the market town of Altenmarkt an der Triesting in Lower Austria.

History+

The foundation of Klein-Mariazell Abbey dates back to the Babenberg Margrave Leopold III, who was also responsible for the establishment of Heiligenkreuz and Klosterneuburg Abbeys. The original abbey church was a basilica in a bound system with a transept, choir square, and three apses. Due to its remote location, economic difficulties, and repeated destructions, the monastery never achieved the significance of other large abbeys.
