Lambach Abbey

The origins of Lambach Monastery date back to around 1040. Following a tragic family event in 1050, in which his mother and brothers died, Adalbero of Würzburg transformed an existing secular foundation of his father Arnold II into a Benedictine monastery in 1056. He populated it with monks from Münsterschwarzach. Adalbero spent most of his final years in Lambach, where he died and was buried in 1090. In 1233, the monastery suffered severe damage during an invasion by the Bavarians. The current appearance of the complex was largely shaped by the abbots Placidus Hieber, Severin Blaß, and Maximilian Pagl in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Emperor Joseph II dissolved the abbey in 1784, but monastic life was restored just a few years later. The monastery experienced another interruption during World War II, when it served as a National Socialist educational institution from 1941. After the war, the convent returned. The monastery's patronage is dedicated to Mary.

Stift Lambach is located in the municipality of Lambach in the Wels-Land district, in the Upper Austria region, Austria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 376 meters above sea level.

Stift Lambach remains an active Benedictine monastery to this day. The abbey church, which was restored after its destruction in 1233 and rebuilt in the 15th century, still features early Romanesque frescoes in the former bell house of the westwork. The current church building, a typical example of 17th-century Austrian monastic architecture, was constructed under abbots Hieber, Blaß, and Pagl. Significant artists such as Filiberto Lucchese, Thomas Zaisel, Christoph Abraham Walther, Melchior Steidl, and Joachim Sandrat contributed to its design. Today, the monastery continues to be a place of spiritual life and culture.
