St. Florian Monastery

The precise origins of St. Florian Abbey are not definitively documented by historical sources. However, a 9th-century tradition, the Passio Floriani, recounts the martyrdom of Saint Florian in 304 and his burial at the current abbey site, suggesting an early tradition of veneration. The first written evidence of a monastic complex dates back to around 800 AD. In 1071, the Augustinian Canons were introduced as a reform community by Bishop Altmann of Passau. The Baroque reconstruction of the abbey buildings began in 1686 under Carlo Antonio Carlone, who shaped the church and the west wing until his death in 1708. Jakob Prandtauer took over construction management in 1708 and completed, among other things, the south wing with the Marble Hall. After Prandtauer's death in 1726, Jakob Steinhueber continued the plans. Around 1750, construction was completed, resulting in the abbey's unified Baroque appearance. From 1848 to 1855, Anton Bruckner served as the abbey organist and found his final resting place beneath the organ named after him. In January 1941, the abbey was confiscated by the Gestapo, but after World War II, the canons were able to return and resume monastic life.

St. Florian Abbey is located in the market town of St. Florian, in the Linz-Land district of Upper Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 297 m above sea level.

Today, St. Florian Abbey is an active monastery run by the Augustinian Canons. Visitors can explore the magnificent Baroque buildings, including the collegiate basilica, and experience its rich history and impressive architecture.
