Saint Bernhard Nunnery

The Abbey can be visited

The former Cistercian nunnery, Stift St. Bernhard, is located in Sankt Bernhard-Frauenhofen in the Waldviertel region in Lower Austria.

History+

The monastery's origins date back to 1277, when the Cistercian nunnery of Neumelon was relocated to its current site in "Chrueg im Pewreich am Teffenbach." Stephan von Maissau, whose wife was Margarete von Neuhaus, served as the founder. Her sister Maria became abbess as early as 1285. The monastery was dissolved in 1580 during the Reformation. Six years later, in 1586, the former monastic estate was handed over to the Jesuit College in Vienna.
