Saint George's Abbey

In Carinthia, Austria, Stift St. Georgen celebrated its millennium in 2003. It is situated in the municipality of St. Georgen am Längsee.
History+
The foundation of St. Georgen monastery took place between 1002 and 1008 by Countess Wichburg, wife of Count Ottwin von Sonnenburg. A founding charter, now preserved in the Carinthian State Museum, attests to the first mention of the abbey. Between 1654 and 1658, the complex underwent extensive Baroque redesign by master builder Pietro Francesco Carlone, though elements of the original architecture and Renaissance arcades in the northern courtyard were retained.
