Waldhausen Abbey

The foundation of Waldhausen Abbey took place in 1147 by Otto von Machland, initially in Säbnich (Sarmingstein), before it was moved to its current location before 1161. In the mid-15th century, after destructions, the abbey underwent partial reconstruction and restoration. In the 16th century, the vogtei was sold. Between 1647 and 1680, under Provost Laurentius Voss, an early and high Baroque new building was erected, based on plans by Carlo Canevale. In 1785, the last provost, Floridus Fromwald, resigned due to economic difficulties and transferred the administration to the abbeys of St. Florian and Kremsmünster. Its dissolution by Emperor Joseph II occurred in 1792, and the lordship of Waldhausen passed to the cathedral chapter in Linz.
